Is ASTYM Treatment Right For You?

Live Athletics Physical Therapy Westlake Village ASTYM

What is ASTYM

Astym treatment is done by physical therapists and regenerates healthy soft tissues (muscles, tendons) to eliminate or reduce unwanted scar tissue that may be causing pain or movement restrictions.

Last year, researchers at  the University of Texas found that Astym treatment is highly effective for restoring movement and reducing pain from soft tissue injury/dysfunction.

Astym focuses on helping people eliminate the underlying cause of their pain and discomfort, rather than just treating symptoms.

How does it work?

Astym treatment is non-invasive and involves the application of instruments to locate dysfunctional tissue. The mild pressure exerted on underlying soft structures is transferred topically (on or above skin).

Astym treatment improves soft tissue healing by stimulating the growth and resorption of scar tissue, as well as the regeneration of tendons, muscles, and other structures.

How long does a session take?

Most Astym treatment sessions last around 15-30 minutes, depending on your condition. Most conditions resolve after 4-5 weeks of treatment and therapy.

Common conditions that may benefit from an ASTYM program are:

  • Anterior and Posterior Tibialis Tendinopathy
  • Arthrofibrosis
  • Back Pain
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Chronic Ankle Pain and Stiffness
  • Chronic Wrist Pain and Stiffness
